week 3: DRIppINg LEggINg

Eva Hesse

I looked at tensions, creating a point on the garment of intensity, straining its balance . The force pulling down was equally matched by the force pulling up. After my initial research I felt a need to push this idea materially further. I looked outside the realm of traditional padding applications - creating pockets and then filling them with a liquid that foamed and set as a pliable material. The stretch knit that i used was relatively porous and i knew there would be some leaking, but was unsure to what extent. Because much of what i was doing was quite experimental, several technicalities have yet to be refined within the garment.

week 2: letssingsinglets

cut & paste singlet

I am becoming much more concerned with construction and economical processes, what will give the sharpest, cleanest result. I love beautifully constructed garments, but i also have an appreciation for things that are made poorly but with 100% effort and the best intentions(not laziness). For my own singlet I combined three singlets into the one garment, trying to cohere them by giving them similar intentions as a whole, but very different characters as individuals. I also wanted to play with the idea of stretch, trying to subvert or undermine this quality, through layering with a saboteur (woven) under the correct application.

week1: amazing t-shirts

Just a brief introduction to stretch looking at generic garments, this week the t. I was thinking about the generic grading of such garments and when they cease to become that which they are named. Is it simply the shape or is it a familiarity and a comfortability that make them their name sake. Given an opportunity to alter their finishing techniques was a simple way of skewing their 'correctness'. I was thinking of the t as a whittled down garment, stripped of all its adornment, formality, refined and simplified to the point of almost neutral. Is it a good idea to build something up once again? adding 'design' to something already so assimilated perfectly into society. Or is it important to constantly reevaluate such things, can their function still waver when at such a point?
I considered simple things like hem and ribbing width. Using the idea of purposly screwing up their perfection, turning them into failed t- shirts, the ones that didnt quite make it into the basket. This rather than adding design, although this is an inherent by product hopefully.
